week 3

Hi everyone,
For this Tuesday post an introductory paragraph using one of the 6 methods of introduction we discussed last class. The paragraph you post should be able to serve as the introductory paragraph for an essay on one of the following topics: explain the significance of a recent cultural experience that you have had, or analyze the causes of a misunderstanding in which two or more people interpreted the same thing in different ways. Take care to articulate your thesis fully in the paragraph. See you on Tuesday!

  2. Jawaharlal Nahru once quoted, "Culture is the widening of the mind and of the spirit". In everday life we come across people with different cultural backgrounds which are different than ours, however we don't see it as a conflict until people of different cultures fall in love and have to choose a culture they will follow. To some, culture and tradition isn't as important as it may be to others. I on the other hand, believe that my culture and religion is very important to me and and would want to pass it onto my children. Two of my friends of different cultures are planning on getting married however they come from different cultures and religions. Like Nahru said, culture widens the mind and spirit but it also makes the couple have some hard decisions to make. some decisions may include religions, holidays, traditions, etc. Each decision they make has an impact on their future.

  3. What type of music do you favor? Have you ever explored your musical interest into other genres?
Over the Summer in NYC, and in collaboration with the "City Parks Foundation", the City provided FREE concerts and shows to the public in Central and Bryant Park on their Summer Stages. The concert I attended was the "Metropolitan Opera Summer Recital". I chose to attend this event merely because I have never been given the opportunity to attend and hear a live opera. So, before I gave myself the chance to change my mind, my friend and I thought it would be nice to experience these not so ordinary musical sounds and singing. It turned out to be an inspiring and enjoyable experience with just a few boring moments. I came to appreciate and understood opera and the culture behind it. I also recommend taking your girlfriend or boyfriend on a romantic date to experience life at the opera.

  4. When I was a school girl our history teacher made a point. He asked for 5 volunteers to step out the room. Then he told us a simple sentence. After that he called the first volunteer and told him the very same sentence. The task was to deliver that message to the last person as close as possible to the original one. At the end the last volunteer got completely different message to what was said at the beginning of the experiment. The teacher’s point was that people interpret the same thing in different ways. Two different people will understand the same sentence or an event differently. My guess this happens for two reasons. First reason is that people don’t pay enough attention to each other therefore they leave out the details which may be crucial. The other reason is that not every person may distinguish what information is important in a particular moment and which one is useless.

  5. BROAD STATEMENT
Every culture has different layers of meaning to certain gestures, noises or manners. Living in such a multicultural region such as New York, complexities are confronted all around us. Certain situations may be rude in one culture but respectful in others, In Italian homes, the owner will never ask for your shoes to be taken off before entering since they consider it rude. In Japanese homes, it is custom for not only your shoes to be taken off at the door, but for them to be facing towards the door when taken off.

  6. People all over the world live in various conditions and follow random rules. This came to my attention at age nine when I visited the country of Jamaica. Before getting to my luxurious "Americanized" resort my tour bus took myself and my fellow vacationers for a grand tour of the island. It was then when I saw poverty at its greatest. The sight of people begging for food and money on the streets completely took me by surprise. Lack of food even affected their animals who looks skinny and malnourished. Children were playing unsafely in the streets among many other mind boggling sights. This was a cultural experience I will never forget.

  8. During the month of June, 2009, a very hot debate came up with the issue of MTA Sikh workers wearing turban. Turban, a head gear, is an integral part of their faith and culture. MTA required Sikh MTA workers to wear MTA logo on their turban for the purpose of identification. The Sikh workers argue that it’s religious discrimination. Their religious head gear should be left alone since there are more logos on the uniform, and there is no reason for any misidentification. There has been a law suit filed, and the matter is in court to be judged.

This past weekend I became the Godfather to my nephew Jason, this was a complete honor for me to be chosen being that I had so many older male cousins. To be asked to take on such an important role and title in a family member’s life is something that is considered special amongst my family and me. This to me was the greatest cultural experience I’ve had in my 20 year life and hope that many others will embrace their chance if they are someday given this same opportunity. Cultural experiences are important for many reasons, mainly because they shape your life and help you to understand who you are as a person and where you come from.

  10. Misuderstandings can often occur between people who speak different languages. Each language has it's own vocabulary. Descriptive words may vary in each language. Therefore someone may not be able to understand what you are talking about because in their language the word you mentioned might not be easily translated into their language.

  11. There are many access points to the understanding of a culture, including language, music, literature, popular ideas...etc. However, one may ask: Besides these conventional routes, perhaps there exist an alternative medium that achieve the same goal, but in a more casual manner? I believe so from my working experience as a waiter, and that medium is food. Let's take the famous Korean pickled vegetables, "Kimchi", as an example. From tasting "Kimchi" and the motives in wanting to know more about it, we can derive quite a lot of knowledge regarding the geometrical and historical aspect of the Korean culture.

  12. Confusions and concerns come in the minds of many individuals when one tries to understand and comprehend various cultures. It may seem what others do are different from the norm. There is often barriers in language, customs, beliefs, etc. Morality and teachings vary from area to area. What may seem an everyday routine can seem bizarre to others. However, passing imediate judgement can be crucial when studying different cultures. One should step back and be observant in the way others deal with certain aspects of their lives and surroundings.

  13. Every culture has its own way for people to express passion and feelings, like Chinese like to share the food with you to show you how friendly they are while American think it is rude to touch other people's food with his own chopstick. It affects what type of food, music, sports etc you like. Then misunderstanding occurred.

  14. This summer, I had the great opportunity to spend a month in Greece, for a play. It was an experience of a lifetime. This allowed me to learn about the Greek culture, which one could say is very different from the American one. For instance, at lunch people tend to go to a restaurant, sit down and eat … while listening to some great Greek songs. At night, mostly because it was during the summer, in Athens many people go near the acropolis on a rock and enjoy the view of the city of Athens. That is probably the reasons why most of the stores do not open until 10h30 am the next day. Greece is a capitalist country, but if you are looking at the culture, it leans more toward socialism.

  16. It is evident that many of us have encountered a scenario of two people in an argument. have you taken a closer look and realized that these two people are from two very different cultures? Do you think it's because they are raised differently? Do you know that being raised in any way affects the way one looks at any situation? It is even possible for two people to come from the same culture but the way these two people are raised can have a major impact on the way they look upon the situation.

  17. Adapting to a different culture implies a strong psychological effect in people. Once a human being is born, culture is naturally learned as a process in which an individual recognizes it as unique. Culture becomes a primary pattern in an individual’s personality and behavior as he or she actively develops in a society. That is why, when an individual experiences living in a different culture, the process of validating cultural issues develops a shock between dissimilarities of cultures. Based on my personal experience, I have been living in the US for almost four years and I have learned to value and get used to certain American practices to fit in US society. It is my belief that such effect can be seen as a disadvantage in a person’s life.

  18. One of my recent cultural experiences came from a trip that I took to the Dominican Republic. As my family and I were driving through the streets to our resort, we saw some of the people that live there. The supermarkets were open and we came across mangos that seemed really cheap to us because they were ten for one dollar. This was a signigicant experience to me because I saw a significant change in value of the markets.

  19. Every Culture have their own taste and fun. I am native from Northern India and we have a lot of Cultural variations all over the Country. One time I went to South of India and they have Culture totally different from us. They do not like to speak the National language of the Country. They like to Speak English with all people. Moreover their way of eating is also different than from us. They do not prefer to eat with Spoon, they like to eat with hands putting everything in the same container at the same time.
