week 9

Hi everyone,
For the blog this weekend, write one or more paragraphs on a particular place that might work as a research topic. Describe what you know about the place already and what additional sorts of information you would need to obtain by doing research in order to understand this place more completely. Then go online and search for this additional information with google (or a comparable search engine). Also go to the queen's college databases and try a variety of searches to identify scholarly sources that you could use to get the information that you need about your topic.

  1. For my research paper, I decided to study Greece in more depth. Going there almost every summer for so long, I have only gone to a few places. Greece contains many islands, all containing different cultures, history and lifestyles. Every island has different forms of dancing, different accents, and different looks. Greece is big on smoking, seafood, religion and dancing. They are not big on hardwork. They work less and relax more, which is why most of them are stress free. The man is the head of the household and women tend to be housewives. I would like to learn more about the other places and Greece, especially why some island have people with blonde hair and blue eyes and islands like my fathers, are dark featured. Sources I found so far are www.faliraki-info.com/greek-culture,archaeology.about.com, www.the-greek-islands.biz, and www.greecetravel.com/islands/. Some primary sources will be my father and grandmother.

  2. If you haven't heard yet, I'll let you in on the new "Village" of New York City. Williamsburg, NY seems like the new hang out place for many young, tourists, and even mature aged people. The diverse community accommodates people of all ages. From the park, bars, restaurants, and skyline view of NYC, everyone can find something to do. I've lived here my whole life and watched the neighborhood change from crimes to the definition of "the city never sleeps". I also have the opportunity of working at Northside Pharmacy, which is located right in the middle of Bedford Ave, where all the commotion happens. There is not a dull day in this neighborhood. However, I'd like to learn a little more about Northside Pharmacy. It has been a pharmacy since the 1920, once being owned by my aunt. But how has business changed? Is getting medicine more of a hassle now or 90 years ago? Williamsburg has its own newspaper called FREEwiliamsburg (http://www.freewilliamsburg.com/) where plenty of information can be found, http://www.brooklynpubliclibrary.org/ourbrooklyn/williamsburg/ is also a great source.

  3. I was thinking what to write about for my research paper and decided to choose a place I’ve been only once but still can’t get out of my mind how great it was. This place is called Saint Vitus’s Cathedral which is located in Prague, Czech Republic. The reason it captured my attention was that this cathedral is an excellent example of Gothic architecture. This architecture style is not typical for the place where I grew up. Saint Petersburg which is my native city with its luxurious baroque palaces is extremely beautiful but gothic style is something what remained in my memory ever since; therefore, I would like to learn more about Saint Vitus’s Cathedral as one of the examples of gothic style.

  4. I am thinking to write my paper on “Ellis Island”. Now a tourist spot was once the entry location for the immigrants to United States. It’s a very small island with one beautiful, elegant building. Now it is a part of the Statue of Liberty National Monument. It does not have any access by bridge. Anyone visiting Statue of Liberty has free access through ferry to Ellis Island. Most of the time people visiting Statue of Liberty ignore taking a small trip here but it is a place worth to visit. It has a small museum relative to immigrants and a souvenir shop. I have been many times to Statue of Liberty with my family visiting New York but only once, briefly, I have been to Ellis Island and was amazed by its beauty. I want to go there again for a longer period of time and want to know more about this place.
It is located at the Hudson River. Being at the border of New York and New Jersey States, most of it is in Jersey City and a small part of it is in New York City. It is owned by Federal Government. It has been the center of immigration from January 1, 1892 till November 12, 1954. I would like to know what the experience of the immigrants of that time was. I am hoping to find some essay or article written by immigrants of that time.

  5. Having recenly visited California, I fell in love with the state. Everything about it captured my attention and since that time I have not been able to get it out of my head. In the future I would love to permanently move there. To be more specific about the location, I would greatly appreciate living in La Jolla beach which is a great town and beach in San Diego.
Upon my visit I realized how calm and relaxing the atmosphere of San Diego was. It was very different from New york, which is know as "the city that never sleeps." The weather was another element that caused me to fall in love with San Diego. I really dislike cold harsh weather conditions, and San Diego gets as cold as I could comfortably handle. The only thing that concerns me are their natural disasters. You see everyday homes being destroyed by wildfires and earthquakes and this frightens me a bit. I would definantly have to do more resaearch about California's natural disasters. Other than that I wish to move to La Jolla Beach as soon as I graduate college.

  6. The research topic I have in mind and is very much interested in is the "Haunted Houses", which people refers to houses that are inhibited by spirits and believed to be the center of supernatural or paranormal activities. Since it is not the most substantial subject to be investigate in, with a major part of the "happenings" are secondary evidence told by people involved in the incidents, the project will not be aimed at proves or providing positive evidences but to inform people with interest in this topic a investigation with depth of haunted houses. There's one particular haunted house in Long Island that could possibly be the center of the project for its locality and fame, the house on 112 Ocean Avenue in Amityville. Being the basis of several books and movies, I believe it is a good choice because it will be engaging to the reader for its popularity. The first attempt in the search in the school database of the subject though, did not yield a sufficient amount as anticipated. For this reason, this research cannot be conducted exclusively with academical editorial but will include information from individual webpages and blogs.

  7. A place that interests me is the Bermuda Triangle. There are a lot of mysterious incidents and disappearances of aircraft or ships that have occurred throughout the years which are linked to the Bermuda Triangle. Many people believe this to be myth. Paranormal activity or extraterrestrials are two explanations of the many that people give for these disappearances. I would like to find out what is fact from what is fiction and to try to understand what is really behind the Bermuda Triangle.

  8. For my research project I was thinking on doing it on one of the world's popular tourist site, Niagara Falls. I mean I was there this past summer and I was really fascinated by the whole beauty of this natural waterfall. I remember standing on both the New York side and the Canadian side as well i couldn't stop thinking of the waterfall's beauty, its aspect, and how perfect it was. It really feels great just watching the waterfall and it very peaceful. I really want to know where does all that water come from, where is it going. There are so many questions that I have that I hope I can answer with this reseach project.

  9. My first thought about the research paper is the place I totally in love with --Bali. Bali is an island located in Indonesia. It is also one of the most famous tourist destination. I went there with my family last summer, it gave me a great and relexing vacation and experience. It has many beaches since it's an island. The sand was so clean and the sea looked blue and peachful. And there are a lot of BBQ place near the beach, so when I was sitting there and eating sheshi kabob, it was just about sunset. That was so enjoyable and relaxing. The people there wake up early because they are all working hard.
I will do more research on the paper and I will describe more about my experience there.

  10. In every city or town that I have visited, I find a place for myself - a place where I feel comfortable, safe and "at home". I am not sure if it is due to the location, interior or exterior design, atmosphere or the emotions I experience while being there. Among them, there are Rittenhouse Square Park in Philadelphia, where I enjoy drawing nature, Brainwash Cafe in San Francisco that serves the most delicious and "laid back" breakfasts, Washington Square Park in NYC which will never stop fascinating me with its spirit of freedom, creativity and uniqueness. And the latter is the place that I would like to focus my research paper on.
Browsing online, I came across a lot of articles concerning the history of Washington Square Park. It turns out that it used to be an Indian burial ground. I begin to wonder if all parks in New York City hide bones under the ground. And if so, were there different tribes which could lead to the difference in spiritual atmospheres in parks throughout New York?
The architecture and design of Washington Square is also very significant and has been changed a lot during its history and the history of our country. Each new wave in politics or government has brought something new to the park's layout and purpose.
However, what interests me the most is the amazing crowd that usually hangs out around NYU and Washington Square. Live jazz musicians, painters, photographers - all kinds of art production can be found there. And most importantly - it is very enjoyable and relaxed. Personally, I fell in love with this park when, after watching Sweet and Lowdown by woody Allen, I became fascinated by jazz guitar and wasn't able to find any good recordings online. A few days later I was passing by Washington Square and heard the most beautiful jazz music playing right on the street!
I have also found a few articles in JSTOR database regarding music in Washington Square Park that seem to prove useful in my research at a first glance.

  11. “I refer to allegorical and psychoanalytic exegesis. Like Hormer, the Bible, and all other great works of fantasy, the Alice books lend themselves readily to any type of symbolic interpretation –political, metaphysical or Freudian-.”(1) Alice in wonderland is one of the most known books for people of all ages holding a tremendous significance in American Culture. In central Park, there is a statue of Alice. It is a place for families, children, tourists, students, and other people that go there to find a quiet moment in the middle of such hectic city. For my research paper, I will gather information about the tale and writer, the significance of the Alice in wonderland in American culture, anthropomorphism, symbolic representation and relevant information about the statue; such as: why the statue is located in that area in central park?, who donated it?, why is it consider a touristic place? Who goes there? What are the activities around there?, why is it an important place for me?, what Alice evokes on me?, etc.
